I take your first point, Jaysay, but, as for your second, why would it have no purpose? Even if the new EU Constitution has been ratified, I still think we should have a referendum. And if the British people vote against the treaty, then I think we should renounce it. And if that's illegal under EU law, I really couldn't care less. Just for once in modern times I'd like to see a British government stand up and say "sod it, we're doing what our people want and hang the consequences!"
