I watched a programme about one such village a while back and can see the benefits for some not all people. People with debilitating illnesses for example were able to maintain their indepence whilst having back up care on site so to speak. The residents weren't forced to stay on the site, in fact quite a few were shown going out and about shopping and suchlike. I can see many benefits in them actually not least there is always company to be had if you wish to socialise.
