Have to get pedantic on this one: the church in the so-called "Dark Ages" was a more pure and more spiritual institution than it is today. And it was certainly more accepting of scientific experiment and inquiry. Bernard of Clairvaux sort of messed things up ... but what the hell. Starting about the middle of the thirteenth century, the church starts to go a little nuts. I think that one can date the decline of the church into what it is now, not with the Borgia Popes, but with the issue of the Bull "Unum Sanctum ... " by Boniface Vlll in thirteen hundred and something or other (sorry, doing this from memory), which stated that there was no salvation outside the church. Have a nice day, eh
