Murdoch is trying it with a couple of his US papers, but I think its too late now , the quality of most newspapers has dropped too much over the last few years that even if paid subscriptions become the future most of the 'laid-off' journalists who were any good have moved onto other things.
I don't believe any monies raised by subscription will be passed on to improving the quality of the product but will end up being used to either pay dividends or erase red ink .
