You're right. in the press he said he'd 'served' the council for thirty years. Though presumably for the twenty odd years he was employed by them, he was paid a wage.
Isn't the role of Mayor supposed to go to the longest serving councillor? Which I don't think is him.
Explains why he was so keen to jump ship, if the mayorship, and all the fancy trappings, were promised to him, in exchange for support.
The whole thing has a particularly unpleasant whiff about it.
