That's all very well Steph until you have backstreets full of rubbish which has come out of bags ripped open by cats etc.. Even bags which were put out on the morning of the collection often ended up being ripped open and the contents strewn around before the binmen arrived. I often had to put mine out the night before to be sure of catching them the next morning so that meant they were available all night.

Unfortunately I don't think there is an ideal solution which will suit everyone. The wheelie bins are very difficult for some people to negotiate. The old bins which lived in a "bin hole" accessible from the yard and from the backstreet weren't too bad but not everyone these days has a bin hole. And even those had the problem that they provide access to the backyard for anyone who wants to climb through them (and believe me kids do)
