KIPAX - As a ground safety steward at the JJB, can I assure you that Stewards are not allowed bottle tops as well as fans, that is the rules of the Football Association. I agree with most of the points that it does seem silly, considering you buy a bottle of pop, but let me assure you, if it hits you when full whether of pop or some other liquid, it can do damage. The rules apply to all F.A. grounds, just seems that the word hasn't got around to all of them yet. Strictly speaking, there should be a list at each turnstile stating what cannot be brought onto a football ground, this includes things such as knives, glass bottles, air horns (yes I know that they are used at I.E.S.), cans of pop are not allowed either and also beer is not allowed to be drunk whilst in sight of the pitch, unless in a sponsors lounge. The list goes on and is quite long.
As Jeff says, the point is, the stewards should be setting an example for all supporters to create a safe and harmonious atmosphere. It was only a little gripe, and I have to say that on the whole, they do an excellent job.
