If the closure does go ahead and that is then followed by a very hot August, then we are likely so see the canal being swamped by thick algae growth - the nasty, green stuff which you see in stagnant ponds. The canal will look like thick, pea soup. This could well delay any reopening because there will probably then be substancial clean up costs and at the moment British Waterways are facing massive budget cuts (even before the current round of spending cuts).
