Programmes such as CSI and Lost which are well-made and proved to be a worldwide success are very much in a minority. People may think that they never watch BBC stuff but it has far wider-reaching implications on the output of other channels. At the moment they need to compete with quality TV whereas they would simply spew out populist tripe 24/7 if all they had to do was garner viewers.
I know this isn't the point of the thread but it's a little hobby-horse of mine. The BBC needs to trim the dead wood and fat salaries but it's starting to cut into areas it should be leaving alone instead, such as selling off its book and audio departments to third parties.
Bad move.
