Actually, that's quite wide of the mark.

The BBC have plenty of money coming in from overseas sales of their programmes and it has been exactly the same for around 50 years but although many programmes earn far more than they cost to make (Doctor Who being a prime example), they still don't generate the return needed to be self-funding.

The 'jobs for the boys' days are long gone, whatever you might think. The 1980s saw a boom in that sort of thing under John Birt and that regime was finally ended by Greg Dyke, the best Director General there ever was.

The BBC of today is a comparatively slim machine in terms of fat cat salaries but what they need to get away from is multi-million pound deals for people like Jonathan Ross. There's plenty of talent out there that doesn't need to cost anywhere near that much.
