There you go - back in now, using a fresh install of Ubuntu 25min after my last post. And that includes an 245 MB update session in update manager. Now on 2.6.32-24 (Wubi installs 2.6.32-21)

OK - here it is: When I attach the 'phone, I get a popup message top right saying "Auto ETH1 - Connection established"
Apart from the tiniest of spikes in network activity on System Monitor, nowt else.

(Square brackets changed to curly brackets, just in case it causes a problem)
Incidentally, the phone was connected all the time during install. I unplugged it for a few seconds and plugged it back in, which is probably why there's a USB disconnect in there...
