Re: Accy Old Photo's - John Kelly's Album

I am puting my money on Whalley Rd at junction of Broadway. I think it was knocked down to accomodate Broadway, probably in 1936/7 when this was opned as a new road. For many years the land there was left as a garden. The Hope & Anchor pub was just a few doors away, and the Broadway Hotel, formerly Peel Arms was across the road. I suspect that the traffic lights were put in just before the pub was knocked down.Broadway was previously called Marquis St after a local businessman/landowner

I think Atarah is right - the pub comes into the story of 'Bronco Bill' (Bill Hodson)who fought behind it with Joe Hurley, knocking him to the ground and getting charged with murder. Bill had suspected Joe of knocking his wife off. He got sent down for life but was released on licence after saving the life of a prison warder. Manslaughter yes, murder probably not in my view.
