Butter pies were called Catholic Pies because they were aimed at the Catholics and their meat free Friday.......John I am amazed that you have never heard of them, let alone tried them.
Mrs Almond....at the end of Marsden St in Accrington used to do them just on a Friday.....so we also knew them as Friday Pies(cheese pies were also dubbed this).......and they were absolutely delicious.
I haven't had one of these for years.
