Creosote has been on the banned list for quite a while I believe and never soaked very far into most woods, so when cleaned up for use in a house there would very little creosote remaining. I did assume that a wood surround would be approx 2 - 3 feet or so from the fire throat. Closer than that and you could create a problem anyway.
Obviously a great deal depends on your design for the surround.
