Talking telephones, have a look at this; you need to read the fifth paragraph from the end:

I'd heard a few years ago about Accy having one of the first automated exchanges but for some reason I thought it was in the 1920's, not earlier. I wonder what exact circumstances led Accy to be one of the first in line and especially with the very first automatic interconnection (with Blackburn)?
