If the start of the season is anything to go by, Hess will disappear after 10 good games. Then, in comes Big Kev.
I agree that we have too many players for our current financial state, but we only have three centre-halves who have had any meaningful playing time in the league (Edwards, Hessey and Long). It would make more sense to release Smyth & Owens than to fail to take up the chance to loan the proven Long for the rest of the season, even if he does have to bench it while injured or others are in good form.
