Mrs Almond....at the end of Marsden St in Accrington used to do them just on a Friday.....so we also knew them as Friday Pies(cheese pies were also dubbed this).......and they were absolutely delicious.
I haven't had one of these for years.
You are right about the Catholics, my family used to get them on Fridays as we weren't allowed to eat meat on that day. Used to get them from a bakers in Clayton which, strangely, was near All Saints school, the non-catholic one!
