How organic is organic?
I was in Asda today (for want of dog food and something better to do.) While perusing the fruit and veg section I wondered about the unlimited choice of different fruits and veggies on offer. I remember as a kid when fruit and veg were seasonal but now you can get anything you like, all year round. The dietry experts say that by the process of refridgeration and all the other processes it takes to bring our fruit and veg from abroad, vitamins and nutrients are lost. I then happened on some organic apples and wondered whether or not they are really better for you.....
The apples were from Italy so have probably undergone the same refridgeration as the other fruit therefore losing nutrients. Also I had to think about environmental factors. How many people round here have woken up to find a fine film of sand on their cars? Reputed to be Sahara sand, even if it isn't we aren't exactly close to the beaches round these parts so this sand must have travelled in the airstream from somewhere. People in Cumbria were reporting receiving fall out from Chernobyl which must again have travelled. Is it not then conceivable that our organic fruit and veg receive the same pesticides, radiation and other environmental toxins that our non-organic produce does, assuming that pesticide sprays will also travel in the airstream. If that is the case then in real terms these fruits/veggies are really no better for us and another consumer con..
Isn't it amazing how one's mind wanders in Asda? BTW, I forgot the dog food...

and can anyone please tell me what a 'Sharon' fruit is??????
