Two points there:
1) Evidence from elsewhere points to two or three pubs closing whenever a Wetherspoons opens in the locality. However, Wetherspoons are now downsizing their new openings - they are no longer going for big old banks or cinemas but refurbishing existing pubs, such as the Commercial. So the effect may just be one or two pubs closing, rather than two or three.
2) You're being very generous to the drinkers in the Railway in referring to them as 'clientele'. I can think of various words to describe them, but that one is not one of them.
