The best socks were cashmere, but they were maunfactured in Switzerland.
Selective buying, based on origin of production, is a luxury few in the real world can afford.
Without inexpensive clothing produced in the far east, much of the world would be naked.
Which I fear wouldn't be a pretty sight.
