This is where I feel sticking with the formation that served well last year falls down. Last season we had players such as Ryan & McConville who could worry and unlock defences. Players with drive.
Forget talk of having a hangover from the play-offs. To my mind, we've been sussed out. Serving up the same old, same old formation wise makes it easier for the opposition to formulate a gameplan to negate the tactic. Plus I don't think we've got the players on board at the moment to make that tactic work !!!
To me, it was strickingly obvious ......we lacked pace, width and more so penetration. We spent the majority of the game trying to build slowly from the back (unsuccesfully), attempting to play the ball around in midfield and playing the ball around in front of a well organised defence. All well and good if you have the quality of player that can make that killer pass that unlocks defences...
Whilst I'd agree that some of the new lads needed time to settle in / gel, I think that we're way, way too predictable.
One up top, for me at least, isn't working. We're not giving the opposition enough to worry about !!!!
There, to me, lies the reason for the lack of goals scored.
