I blame Garibaldi, and his lousy biscuits.

It all started going downhill for the Italians after unification in the nineteenth century.

They were much happier as collection of city states, with the shouty lot confined to the south.

People are always more content under independent rule, rather than all be lumped together, as some unworkable super state, governed from far away.
