Remember once having read some anthropological studies about how Latin peoples in particular use fireworks as a provocation to their neighbours -there is great pride in having the biggest and best display to be seen from one village to the next...typical male thing (re:mine is bigger than yours and therefore better!) a sort of ostentation of strength if you like. 
They show wealth and power and therefore in troubled times are a way of saying "we are alright" . Perhaps that's why there are more and more occasions when they are being used nowadays -sort of sticking two fingers up at adversity!
