Plus I don't like it's depiction of Northerners as adulterous drunks. I can't think of one long-term marriage in it (Hayley and Roy? Mmm) or a traditional family set-up.

I agree with some of your points! One big error in all soaps is the issue of prison visits. They always get non-family members visit appointments on the day at short notice! In reality that does not happen. An individual or family member can not turn up at a prison to see someone in there by cold calling - they just would not get in. Yet in soaps they always do - it's rubbish! Your right they are all stereo types all northerners arn't drunks or wife swappers - except maybe Jaysay!
