It happens in lots of companies so is nothing unique to the NHS. Where I work they were telling us that we are paid more than other local firms and national firms in the same business, that they always have paid more so they can attract the best staff and all that blurb. That extra money is soon swallowed up though in diesel though because I do about 20,000 miles a year just to get to work and back. A quick guess would be £3500 a year in diesel, that's not including the maintenance on a car with almost 260,000 miles on the clock .
