Me too until I came across this thread ... for a couple of years I managed to be in the choir ... bonus was that you got to cut classes for practice.
After I remembered, I googled Group Captain Cheshire ... holy feces Batperson, what a guy! Winning the VC for four and a half years of sustained bravery and leadership in over 100 missions! Plus his DSO and two bars, and his DFC and bar. And all I could think of at the time was "What a boring old fart", or something like that. He seemed so ordinary ... the "banality of heroism" ... for some folks, probably most, heroism can be a defining moment; but for Cheshire, it was a defining four and a half years of moments.
