A few Old Photographs of Ossy.

6 Attachment(s)
Searching through an old trunk of photographs this afternoon, I found some photographs showing parts of Ossy that have changed a little, as well as my family.

Thought they might be of interest to anyone who lives near where they were taken.

1/ Stanhill Sermons, 1912. Stanhill Hall. Leader of orchestra Charles Hyatt, second from right, back row.
(My great Grandfather, Alfred Martin, third from right, back row.)

2/ Rhyddings Park, at the front gates. Cllr Hargeaves speaking, before the opening. 29th May, 1909.

3/ York Street Methodist Church, Whitsuntide walk, 1963.
Rhyddings Street, showing the Conservative Club to the right, and the old Palace cinema to the left.
(My mother and grandmother centre of the picture.)

4/ Rhyddings Park, 1942. Park Lane, and the long gone railings, in the background.
(My grandfather holding my Dad.)

5/ Garden of Moor End House, bottom of New Lane, 20th July, 1963.
The larger cottages, to the left of the photograph, were demolished shortly after, to be replaced by Mooney's petrol station and garage.
(My parent's wedding day.)

6/ York Street Methodists Whitsuntide walk, 1962.
Photograph taken by Garth Dawson.
Oswald House/The Shopfitters, seen in the background, as is the War Memorial.
(My mother, holding hands with Yvonne Chappel, third from left.)

Think it was just a fashion thing.

My mum said this afternoon it was the first time she 'walked' without a hat, much to her mother-in-laws fury.

You couldn't really get a hat on your bonce when you'd back combed your hair.

Just noticed, mill owner Cllr. Arthur Hargreaves, is also on the one at Stanhill Hall.

He left the Methodist church shortly after, to join St. Pauls, because he wasn't allowed to throw his weight about in chapel.

He'd have to wait until Monday, when they were all back in t'mill, to do that.

:D

Great pics. Before you told when/who they were, I was about to tell you that the wedding photo looked like a mate of mine, Barry Boothman, who lived in Roe Greave.

Please consider getting copiesd made and guiven to Accrington & Ossie libraries. I will PM you with a name of someone who will do it for you.

There's a great big wooden chest of old photographs. Some going way back, to the 1860's.

Most are family portraits, though there's lots of various Methodist churches.

I did search through them a few years ago, for those showing buildings, for the Ossy Gobbin site.

I'll have another delve.

Some kind councillor is currently putting some cine film onto discs.

There's quite a bit of sixties Ossy on there.

Chairman of the Council's procession etc, when it was my great Uncle, Joe Aspinall.
