Plants in the dark

Hello Garden Doctor, is there any plants that like the dark? I want to put a plant in my bathroom but there is no natural light in there. Or does it mean i shall have to stick to an artifical plant.

Thankyou

Hi Sara, sorry for taking so long in getting back to you.
Sorry to say but any house plant shall struggle to survive in 'the dark' as you have put it ( unless you fancy growing mushrooms !!) - all plants need some form of light to help them grow (photosynthesis).
BUT there are a number of house plants that you can have in damp, moist conditions (like a bathroom) that can survive in a 'low light'.
Now you have a small choice here so I have narrowed it down to a hardy few for you ok ??

1. an "Aspidistra" (the cast Iron plant) there are not many plants who can tolerate poor light as much as this can, its actually quite a hard plant to kill (hence the name!) - would survive where you are asking for.

2.The "Philodendron" now this comes in 2 varieties - either hanging (heart leaf, sweetheart plant) or upright (tree philodendron) - both are equally as nice but the hanging would look better in a bathroom.

3. The "piggyback plant" lovely little hardy plant where the young stems join the stalks of the bigger stems (hence the name) and thus grows - ideal for a bathroom as a moderate to shady area is preferred.

4. The "mind-your-own-buisness" looks quite similar to a moss plant because of its small leaves likes a cool to moderate room and doesnt like direct sunlight - so it would be ok for you !!

5. The "Selanginella" - a relative of the fern family with mossy green leaves , has a very soft feel to it - prefers a shady area also.

The plants I have mentioned are/will/should be available at most good/decent garden centres and dont be afraid to ask for any of the names above they will have heard of them !

Now these are only my suggestions sara, I am not saying this is what you must get, but I think you would get the same answers if you were to ask around - (unless they dont know what they are talking about !!)
Hope I was of some help - and thanks for being my first poster !
