That's him. He never fancied following in his dad's business - had his heart set on the London Palladium from a very early age - it was THE big weekly show on telly then.

Fair play to him - he followed his dream & made it come true.

We were in the same class for a time at Accy Grammar in the early 60s.

Ronnie Hill - Olympic athlete, World Record Holder - 10 miles I think for a great number of years - and most remembered for being my friend at Spring hill and then AGS.

Think you may be mistaken about that, Barrie. As far as I'm aware, he never played for Stanley?

I mentioned his critical success, when we had a family outing to the theatre on Saturday.

My nephew knew all about him, as he'd recently returned to his old school to give a talk, and a performance for the pupils.

Just came across something about Alan Ramsbottom coming 16th in 1963 Tour de France. Said he was born in Accrington. Anybody know anything more?

Came from Clayton. There is an Alan Ramsbottom Way in Great Harwood.

In that 1963 Tour de France, Alan Ramsbottom did finish 16th - but was lying THIRD at one time. I think he came from Clayton rather than Accrington. Another of his claims to fame is that he ran in the first ever London Marathon. Indeed, he has achieved fame by having a street named after him. Almost as high an honour as having a pub named after you.
