Re: Broadband Speeds

If you're using a phone line(as I am) will the results vary depending on how many people are on the internet using your local exchange?
Results for two runs on speed.io a few minutes apart-
Download 6840/6599
Upload 379/344
Connections/min1435
Ping 48/78

Big variation on ping??-Response time between computer and internet.
Perhaps Neill(who obviously knows what it all means) can explain what they mean, what should we expect and are our results good or bad? I know we would appreciate it if you can, Neill.
By the way, didn't someone once say you could rinse your keyboard if you spilt on it? Is that true?? The whiskey and dry doesn't seem to have done any harm(although the waste upset me) but will it be alright to leave it?

If you try rinsing it you may as well be prepared to buy a new one, liquids and keyboards don't mix.
Mine is covered in two layers of cling film and selotape, makes it a bit harder to type, but I've had this keyboard now for nigh on 20 years. Its not a standard keyboard, it has 129 keys, and does things a standard keyboards can't.

Re: Broadband Speeds

All these figures are no good unless you put them against the broadband speed your paying for.

The free scan's just an advert, ignore it. This one was recommended to me by an ISP as the most reliable.

Re: Broadband Speeds

All of these speed test websites rely on there own speed to be able to cope with all the people using them at the same time. You always get variations.

I like the last one linked personally but ignore any offers like suggested. It is usually very good.

Re: Broadband Speeds

O2 are good for speeds

IF you are close to town(exchange)... I am pretty close to it and I get 20MB Download speed. If you use usenet good test is to actually test the download and upload via usenet as those test sites are never 100% accurate

I used to live in clayton on queen street, there i was getting 6MB Download speed with O2. My friend who lives close to hare and hounds is on talktalk is on 3MB... I guess talktalk put a nice big cap on speeds

Or you were lucky and had better quality bits of copper doing to your house.

I live in Rishton we don't live in a cable street which is restricts choice. My broadband speed is typically 3mb or slower that's on Orange Home Broadband. Last night I tried to download a bbc iplayer programme it told me it would take an over an hour to download a 1 hour programme. We're a currently in our notice period we've only been with them less than a month.

Re: Broadband Speeds

Just an update-I got an 'e' mail from BT 3 weeks ago saying they were upgrading their network in my area and I should see a gradual improvement over the next 10 days.
Just run the speed test and got-
Download- was 6840 on 4/3. Now 8097kb/sec.
Upload- was 379 at best. Now 1048kb/sec
Connections- was 1435, not changed
Ping- was 48/78. Now 34.

Download/ upload looks good but Ping??
So BT did something.
