They've taken the maps down at Ossy Mills for an Accrington Pals display.

Went to Chairman, says, "Yes Marketing has images on a DVD, ask them" Gave me a run-down of the history of the stream, etc. Confirmed everything you have said. I proceed to ask Manager in marketing,"Have you got maps on DVD?" " No.. but will ask Director of Ossy Mills, when he gets back from business trip, where they are and get shots for you" Gets back to me nobody knows where they stored them, but belong to civic society,"here is E-mail address of Civic Society Chairman" duly notes this. Goes back to Chairman, explains what has happened,"Do you know where said maps are?" "Yes" quotes he "In the old showroom next to you". "But says I, our Marketing Department says does not have these on DVD". "Are you sure?" says Chairman, did ask for it to be done, anyway, they are going back in three weeks time". In the meantime, searches dismantled showroom, but lights not working properly and can't find the bloody things !! Chairman comes to me on Friday asks if I have got them. "No" I reply in disappointed manner. He notes my crestfallen expression and says : "I think young Sarah has these on computer, but she is on holiday, ask her when she gets back from holiday !!" Think tomorrow, so I will carry on with this quest. Will post next episode tomorrow. ... |
Re: Name the stream
 Bloomin heck Kate ...... all that trouble!! Cheers though :)
|
Re: Name the stream
Chapter ll .. well, young lady back from holiday and seems they did attempt photographs of the maps, but are laminated and the reflection distorted the image to the camera, also too large for them to scan.
So .. will E-Mail Mike Booth (have left address on pad at work and didn't get time today). Was history teacher at Rhyddings. Seems he has written books on Oswaldtwistle that can be obtained, so feel might get directed to said books. Will give it a go anyway. x |

Tinks? Me? Doug? I've never believed any marketing person they do tend to bend the truth. So the bottom line is we still don't know the answer for now. |
Re: Name the stream
Must admit Bagpuss, have got a little lost in this thread, just trying to find the maps that's all for yer'. Just that Hilden Group chairman has a lot of knowledge with regard to streams in Ossy, etc., as probably owned most of them in the past, and confirmed where it started etc. Did glaze over a little when he was telling me the history of it all, but what is the ultimate answer you are looking for .. sorry, know probably being a little thick here.
|
Re: Name the stream
Well, 'spect you all bored by my hunt by now, however, E-mailed Civic Society, no reply as yet . possibly on holiday BUT .. have found the maps, ironically 10 yards in front of me behind a division wall. Let me know what you want me to look at and will do.
Tinkerbelle: sure if you wished to come and look, they wouldn't mind. |
Re: Name the stream
If you go back to the first post we are trying to find out the name of a stretch of water. We want to know if it has one name from Jacobs Lodge to the River Hyndburn or if it splits and then there would possibly be two names.

It really is a fantastic display and when it goes back up in Ossy Mills I recommend anyone with even the slightest bit of interest in local history, to go along and take a look. Heres the pics : :D Bagpuss and Dougie you will now bow at the feet of me ... the knowledgable one! |

Re: Name the stream
She's wrote Antley Skye on that map with a biro this afternoon!!!!:D
Only joking, well done.:) I remember looking at the same charts. They also had one which showed a prehistoric burial mound which is still visible on the horizon line of Ossy moors, if I remember correctly. |

Loved every minute of this lunch hour in lovely company. Awakened my interest here, and will back back in the morning to give this display a good going over. Thanks to Peter Hargreaves for getting them out for us and I loved the fact he loaned me the 130 year old key, with original Jacob's Lodge tag still attached for the sluice gates they put there to control the water flow. |

I have to say even though you have found the name I am still far from being convinced that Antley Syke ran from Jacobs Lodge all the way to Hyndburn Rd. I will study your maps and see if I agree but I guess it's up to me now to prove you wrong. |

Re: Name the stream
Right, I have this little theory.
You said Bagpuss that you think it's Springhil Clough, is the clough not just the wooded or areas with trees there and the Syke is the stream? I noticed a number of different Sykes and Cloughs on these maps today. Does that make sense? What I'm trying to say is that we are actually both right ...... Springhill Clough is the wooded area that Antley Syke stream runs through. |
Re: Name the stream
I concede with good grace. (Not happy, you bloody fairy) I stand by the fact that I have peed in the thing on many, many occasions and never once called it or knew it by the name of Antley Syke.
Kate, darling, sweet angle of womanhood. Could you find out for me if there are any full scans or copies of the maps in question? I would love to be able to look over them at my leisure. Good work Kate. Nice to see that some old place names, details, and farmsteads have survived the passage of time. |

Re: Name the stream
That's very good of you but it's begining to look as though I am wrong. What we knew as Springhill Clough will always be that as it was a name we made up, I doubt you would find that on any map. I really did think that Antley Syke began somewhere near Ossy Mills and from there to Jacobs Lodge had a different name.

Re: Name the stream
Looking at the maps I think Antley Syke as it is commonly known on accyweb does not start at Jacobs lodge.
