Name the stream
:) Now then, I've just been chatting with mtheads dad about local places. He asked if I knew the name of the stream that roughly seperates Ossy from Accrington until it reaches Church.
It roughly runs from Jacob's Lodge, under the Bridge on High Street, down Pendleton Avenue, at the back of St Marys school then Moscow Mill street. It eventually joins the River Hyndburn, we think. Let's see who get's the right answer first ;) |
Re: Name the stream
:) Are you referring to the Tinker Brook, Tinks? Are is that too obvious :D
You little Tinker :) |

Re: Name the stream
Give your brother a ring and ask him Rind, see if he know's ;)
No Gayle neither of those :D |
Re: Name the stream
I'm bugg**ed if I know the name, but the route of the stream, roughly working backwards is as follows:
You can see where it emerges and joins the Stink by standing in the middle of the bridge over the Stink at Church, and looking towards the Sports centre entrance. If you then look down, you'll see the water coming out the side of the bank. It is then along, to the back of the Bridge pub and then it goes underneath the Sacred Heart school. You can see quite clearly the dip in Tanpits road where the stream once made out a shallow valley. It then goes underneath the old Fraser Eagle coach garage and underneath Blackburn Road between the Snooker Hall & the Oaktree pub. It is of, course, the eastern boundary between Church & Accy (the sign is there saying "Accy" and of course that is why the Oak Tree pub is so called (Accy being the place where Acorns grew...hence Oak Tree) Church's western boundary with Ossy, is of course the Tinker, and on leaving Church along Blackburn Road, you can see the Ossy sign right above where the river goes underneath the road. However, back to the Eastern stream...it was the daming of this that resulted in the reservoir on the Church/Accy/Ossy border, which was susequentlt divided in two by the railway. The new estate lies right on top...go further back, and it goes alongside Ossy Mills. Changes in drainage in the mid-19th century, around Springhill & northern Ossy means that the stream collects only a tiny amount of waterflow. I still don't know the name, though. |

Re: Name the stream
I can’t think of any others in the area. I know the one you mean though. I think the Woodnook runs in to it at some point. If it’s the One I think it is It raises just below Green Howarth.

Re: Name the stream
The route excellently described by Mr. T is a clue to it's name. ;)

Re: Name the stream
Well I know the one you mean but I have no idea what it's called either.

Re: Name the stream
And I can nearly paddle in it whilst sat on my front door step and I dont know what its called either

Well, I've cheated & just done a google....but to no avail. It would appear that HBC don't know the name of the stream, either; this is a planning document from last year:

Re: Name the stream
After studying all the evidence it's my impression that any running water from Moscow Mill Street is Antley Syke but from Jacobs lodge to the bottom of coal pit lane it is something else.

I've just been following it's route on that Mario map website. It shows it clearly but no name.
I'll go and have a look at the maps tomorrow were Ian's dad saw it, if I can find them. |
Re: Name the stream
Out of interest Tinkerbelle what did you think it was called?
|
Re: Name the stream

Right, the maps are on the walls in the Oswaldtwistle section at Ossy Mills. |
Re: Name the stream
Sorry just read the early posts again and you did say Tinker Brook.
|
Re: Name the stream
Ok. I can’t be sure but I think we’re still right. Springhill Clough runs out for Jacobs lodge and runs all in a straight line following Orchard Drive, Star Street crossing the corner of Tanpits on to the Hyndburn.
Now Antley Syke I believe ran a course through Lower Antley as it was and now takes a line under Lonsdale Street and India Street and on to the Hyndburn. This of course maybe just supposition on my part but if anyone is going up to the library anytime soon I would be interested to find out if this is correct? |

Re: Name the stream
I don't think it's the Tinker Brook. That comes down from the John St. area before making it's way to the bridge on Union Road.
|
Re: Name the stream
What about Antley Hall (by Bullough Park) there must surely be a connection with that due to that name.
