Holland Street

If anyone is in the area with a camera over the next few days could they take some snaps? I lived at 14 for a few years and it sadly looks like demolition time has come! All the windows were boarded up when I went past on the bus the other day.
It's a real shame, it was a lovely little house that. You can bet that the pine doors and the fireplaces have gone already. :(

I would appreciate some photos too as I lived at number 32 until I married. To be honest I felt such a lurch when I saw Lyndsay's post as I have lots of memories of the area.

I'd love to see it again for one last time.

It looks really sad June, I loved that house the moment I walked thru the door on the first viewing and to think of it now all dark and empty is quite upsetting.

My Mum bought ours in the late fifties and I remember that her mortgage was 350 quid. No bathroom or any luxuries but we were happy enough. Lots of memories.

There are a couple of photos of Holland St on the Accrington uncovered site , in the Project Phoenix bit, they are the last 2 on. Must have been a while back though as that huge conifer you can see on the first one was in my garden and it was chopped down about 3 years back!

junetta 22-02-2008 23:30

Re: Holland Street

I remember that the white house at the top was a little shop when I was a kid and the lady next door was called Annie. I also remember that there was a chap half way down who had a train set in his bedroom. No-one ever saw it but it earned him the name of 'puffing billy'.

We were on the same side of the street but in the top half. There was a Mrs Hirst who had a dog called Peggy. She never knocked but would walk in shouting 'it's only me'. Alderson, Dawson and Shorrocks are the names that I can recall.

I see you got a picture of my old backyard Mick, when I left a year ago the yard was empty and the wall was still up! Looks like it's been used as a landfill site now, it must be full though because they have started using the front garden for tipping as well.

Thank you so much Mick. So sad to see it go but I suppose that it had to happen at some point. My Mum was buried from there and I left it on my wedding day.

It would be appreciated if you follow the progress and thanks again xxxx

Thanks Mick, what a crying shame ! Those houses were a decent size and it was a decent area when I moved there in 1993 , strangely no mention of project phoenix when I bought it !

Re: Holland Street

It is nice to remember pleasant times in houses once lived in, and sad to see them demolished.
I have lived in 11 different houses in my lifetime. They have varied between 200 years old and brand new - 2 flats, 6 terraced, 1 semi, 1 bungalow and 1 cottage.

It is very easy to get sentimental and attached to a place that has happy memories, but we need reminding that it is only bricks and mortar, and as times and we change, the house style we need changes too.

What matters most is the people we knew and loved when we lived there, and that will stay with you as long as you have the memory.

How do people living in Accrington feel about these demolitions? I know sentiment stands in front of progress and all that and there is little doubt that progress as changed the area over decades but think it’s sad to see such changes, individual histories and memories are being erased with time.

GUTTED

its such a shame about Blackburn road, although i dont live in Accrington anymore i think its awful, i used to 'hang out' around that area when i was a kid, i was really sad when they pulled down Sacred Heart Church, that held a lot of memories for me, my gran used to take me there when i was ickle, and my mum and grandad where buried from that church :(

yer right mate, was said to see me mam n dads house go on dowry st yrs ago, usually park there when visiting n old friend,n getting me haircut, seems very strange to park in front of a bungalow, where the house used to be, know its just sentiment n memories, but things do move on.

Does anyone know what happens to the metal street name signs upon demolition? I would have thought the council would have kept 'em, if only to sell at a later date to old romantics (such as myself).

Has anyone noticed the absence of rear kitchens on Holland Street? Every other Victorian terraced street around Hyndburn is characterised by the subsequent building of out kitchens in the back yard, but not apparently Holland Street. One wonders why? There does however, appear to be a preponderence of satellite TV dishes so it makes one wonder about the priorities of the people who lived there. Where have they all moved to? Probably Burnley or Dewsbury, I expect.

Re: Holland Street

Not so, when I moved to my house at 14 the dining kitchen was the biggest room in the house, the front room was large enough for 2 two seater settees and tv etc but the kitchen was huge ! Also had a very decent sized yard so didn't see any need to build an extension on, the kitchen had fitted units around 2 walls and a dining table and 6 chairs in the middle as well as all the white goods and a 5ft welsh dresser. plenty of room for what was then only 2 of us. The Sky tv has always been a priority for me, a little bit keen on the old cricket doncha know.

Holland Street in the early fifties brings back some memories for me.

I used to go out with a girl (Rose Griffiths) who lived at number 2.

Aw thats sad, just been looking at the gallery all those houses have some history & memories for those who lived there, 19th century houses quite a heritage to be replaced with modern boxes with no character, tho the flip side is that once delapidated its an eyesore dependant on point of view, when i was a kid & they did a clearance in so called slum areas, tho dangerous but kids are kids & im nosey by nature, went in a few of them just to nosey at the funny old wallpaper & layouts, thinking in Lloyd Grossmans - who'd lived in a house like this, when it was in its prime:rolleyes:.

Gets you thinking.... nice pics Mick, will you be documenting the pheonix projects before & after, tho nice to see them before they go sort of thing:D

Re: Holland Street

I am having trouble navigating this site so bear with me.

I am doing a history of my Edwards family who were from Stainland and settled on Holland Street in Accrington. Father, his sons, his brother were all stone masons. All were living on Holland Street in 1881. Some of these houses were still being built then.

I have several questions.

I assume this family of stone masons were building these terraces or others like them. Where did the stone come from?

What was happening that all this building was going on then?

Did my family buy these houses or did they rent?

Can anyone fill in the history for me of these terraced houses on Holland Street?

If anyone is descended from this Edwards family, I will be happy to share what I know.

Thank you.

Carole

Re: Holland Street

A quick response. The street is one of a group off Blackburn Rd which were all named after the countries to which Steiner & Co of Church ( he owned the land the streets were built on) exported to. The stone would almost certainly have come from local quarries - Warmden perhaps or from as far away as Blackburn. Most would be rented I think. That was the case when I lived in Persia St in the 50s. I almost certainly took papers to this house then. What was happening ? The town was booming 1870s,80s. The date it was laid out can be obtained from Accrington library who have a ledger giving that information. ([email protected])

Great photo. I am annoyed that I cannot remembger the shop, but maybe it had gone by the time I was taking papers (1954-7) In 1951 Mr Standring was shown in the directory as a grocer at No 20, which is the location mentioned. I wonder if Owd'Bob's Twist was made in the allotmnents up Owd Bob's at the side of gatty Park?

I urge you to send a copy of this photo, with details, to :[email protected]

That would have been my Uncle, Richard Standring. I think Claude my grandad, in the photo, died in 1947 and his son Richard along with my mum ran the shop. Only Grandma lived there. She died in 1953 when I was 1.

They may have sold the shop shortly after she died as my uncle lived on Park rd and mum lived on Blackburn rd.

I remember her as a kindly old lady....Ha Ha... just kidding I was still in nappies....
