Time Team Dig.............
No, there is no reason for you lot to get excited - there is no planned dig around Hyndburn this summer. On sunday evening's TV, however, there was an excellent episode on a Navvie's mid-nineteenth century camp on the Settle-Carlisle railway. It made an interesting change from the usual Roman/Medieval dig.
According the Lancashire Archaeological survey, there has never been any planned dig around Church and Ossy but I am unsure about the rest of the Borough. Should, by any chance,:D there be a dig around the town, are there any sites any of you would like to see dug? And why? |
Re: Time Team Dig.............
During discussion in the 'Windfarm Anyone' thread, it came to light that there is a prehistoric stone circle on the moors at the border between Oswaldtwistle and Haslingden.
Like many such monuments, little of it is left showing above ground, but an excavation may well reveal far more. This is a link to 'Thirteen Stone Hill' which I googled for that thread The Modern Antiquarian.com | UK | Thirteen Stones Hill (Stone Circle) |
Re: Time Team Dig.............
If you look at the OS map of the Hyndburn Area one thing stands out above all else - Hyndburn is one huge man made area. Anything of any historical value pre Industrial Revoulution era will have probably vanished a long time since. The railway and canal building projects would have vanquished huge swathes of ancient stuff and the sheer volume of housing has also covered up acres and acres.
If there was any site within the area I would like to see dug it would have to be the area around Abbey Street/Back Abbey street to find the site of the Abbey that gave this area it's name. On a more recent historical value it would be the trenches on the Coppice from the wars era. Other sites close to Hyndburn that would be of interest would be Portfield IA fort near Whalley and maybe more on the route of the Roman Road from Ribchester to Elslack which goes via Whalley and Clitheroe. Incidentally. I'm a Big Time Team fan and have been a long term member of the Time Team Forum Friends forum. We also have occasional meets to historical sites. If you're genuinely interested then have a look at us - Time Team Forum Friends. The Forum has recently been updated to a newer software so although it looks a little bare at the moment it will soon fill up!! I'm part of the Admin team and I use the name Phil B. Maybe I'll see you there :D |
