I remember it vaguely, it was across from the Hare and Hounds wasn't it? Was the bingo hall next door?

LOL .. I still refer to that junction as the Load of Mischief, Bernard .. old habits die hard. Have to reword any directions (or whatever), and usually use the funeral parlour as a marker... :D

If I remember right it was about where the bus stop is now, right at top of the road when you turn left at the lights to go down to Rishton.

I don't remember the bingo hall. There could well have been one.

There was definetly a bingo hall in that area but not sure exactly where.

Was the fancy frontage, as shown in the illustration, still like that in the forties/fifties?

Architecturally it makes more sense with that facade, than it does now.

It's always looked unbalanced to me.

I

I only remember it from seeing it on the front of the old Accy buses.

I also remember the conductors shouting that out as a destination whilst they were at the terminal.

To me it sounded like they were shouting Lord of Mischief.

Which I always felt would be a good job to have.

Sadly I never even made it to Master of Mischief.

:D

People still said the Load of Mischief on the bus, when asked where they bound for. This was long after the pub had vanished. The name has always fascinated me as well.

I remember it well, though I was hardly ever in Clayton. When I was at Paddock House there were girls at the school from quite a distance away, as far as Colne and surrounding areas, and there were special buses that came into the school grounds to collect at 4 p.m. It always amused me that one of the buses went to Clayton and would be full of schoolgirls, with "Load of Mischief" on the destination sign.

It actually closed in 1980 Jaysay ... after 160 years of trading, and was demolished to make way for the M65, which was completed in 1996 ... so somewhere around then I guess.

That surprises me kate, I thought it was long before that, I used to go in the Hare and Hounds most Saturday lunchtimes in the late seventies when Big Alan had it, we used to meet the before going to the Rovers and Al used to come with us, I can't for the life in me picture the pub still being there, can remember the Bank on the opposite corner, but not the pub:confused:

Remember it being demolished due to the M65, but can't be sure what year ... when did they start building the motorway ? ...:D

All references seem to confirm this, including Wikipedia :

Ah-ha, just found another link in Wikipedia ... Junction 6-7 was opened in 1984 !! Gosh, how time flies..
