Floods In Rising Bridge

My wife is originally from Rising Bridge and is compiling some notes on her time there. She has tried to register on Baxenden On-Line Scribbles which has some info about the area but cannot register.
We were wondering if any of the historians on here could help with the date of an event.
In the 1960's there was a flood in Rising Bridge when Parkinson's Confectionery shop and the house next door collapsed into the river. Luckily, it was holiday time and nobody was injured but we are trying to establish a date for this event and hoped that someone with connections with Rising Bridge could shed some light on it.
Thanks

Re: Floods In Rising Bridge

Neil posted a photograph of his mother's dress shop in the middle of the same flood. In that thread my mum named the exact date, because it was the day they were going on holiday, and the floods delayed them.

Also my grandpa being an Ossy baker, knew and was friends with the owner of the bakers destroyed in Rising Bridge.

I'll keep trying to search for Neil's photograph on here, so hepefully you'll then know the date.

and theres a picture there as well

Re: Floods In Rising Bridge

This is odd, I can't find the thread.

Just trying to remember key words that might bring it up.

I think I mentioned Parkinson's being destroyed in the thread.

Off the top of my head I think it was July 20th, 1964, because my grandpa was driving my parents to London so they could get the boat train to the south of France. The flloding up here delayed them.

I'm pretty sure it was 1964, because my mother was pregnant with me.

:D

I know i can remember my mum saying that they moved down to the bottom of half of northfield road not long after the floods ... because they lived on the top half of northfield road then.

Re: Floods In Rising Bridge

My mum did get the right date.

It was in post 192 of this thread...

http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...-30856-13.html

'Neil, my mum does remember your mum's shop, now that I've shown her the photograph, but now wants to know when it opened, as she thinks it used to be a bric-a-brack shop, where she bought a water colour from with her first wage?'

Mothers_Shop_1_.JPG :: thanks to Derek Mooney for this Photo Mothers Shop. My mother had a drapery shop at No.70 union road. (opposite the end of Queen Street) and this photo was taken 18th July 1964 when Union Road was flooded. Where the shop stood

'Incidentally, the 18th of July 1964 was the day when we had terrible floods in east Lancashire. A friend of my grandpa's bakers shop was washed away at Rising Bridge, and that day my grandpa was taking my mum and dad to London, to get the boat train to Nice, and the roads were so bad they nearly missed it. Happily I was asleep in my mum's tummy at the time.:D'

Re: Floods In Rising Bridge

Apparently the Parkinson's lost everything in the devastating flood, as it was their confectioner's shop, and their home that was destroyed.

I'm sure others helped too, but local members of the Baker's Federation donated new furniture for them. My grandparents providing a sideboard, table and chairs.

I remember that day well, it was the first Saturday of Accy holidays and the day after was my 18th birthday, can remember going in the Duke of Wellington on Abbey Street for my first legal pint. There was a lot of flooding in Ossy, the Plantation (foxhill nature reserve) was all under water, so was the the land where the scout hut is (or was) opposite the Nash Club, the unmade road which goes past Gayle's house was like a river. It started raining about 11am, can remember I just managed to get home from doing the shopping in Accy because my parents had set off early on holiday and missed all the bad weather, the skies were inky black, then the heavens opened never seen it rain as hard since that day, it was a freak storm which lasted for about 30 minutes, yet in the afternoon it was a really warm sunny, with not a hint of what had gone before

Re: Floods In Rising Bridge

I also remember that day very well, as jaysay has said I have never seen rain like that in this country since (we were on holiday 3 years ago in Salou when we had a very similar downpour)
A lot of the houses on the streets on the edge of Accrington Town Centre were flooded with the water that came down the side of the Coppice.

I took photos of the area the day after the flood washed away the building, it was July 1966, I think the photos are now in Accrington Library.

Would Alliance Street, off Manchester Road, been affected by this too? My Father in Law tells a tale where he and his twin brother had to rescue thier Grandmother from the top floor window of her house on Alliance Street due to a huge flood. He never gave me any particulars, just said it was very frightening for Granny Esther and him!!

I remember the floods very well. The date would be about correct as I would have been about 6yrs old at the time & was at my grandmas that day.
My grans house was at the top of east view which runs over the stream that flooded. I recall standing outside the house watching the water covering the road.
There was also a row of houses next to the stream which were also flooded & had to be demolished a few years later.
I'm led to believe the main cause of the damage was a car being pushed under the road bridge & out the other side. I can actually remember the car being a yellow ford anglia which was only a few weeks old.
The actual flood was caused by a dam further up northfield road failing & collapsing.
Some things are indelibly printed on ones brain as a child & are never forgotten.

That car is on one of the photos I took, they are in Accy Library, from memory the car was white in colour, and was still the right way up, looking a bit battered.

I was doing the Welsh Express for Ribblesdale Batty Holt tours and set off to Butlins Pwllheli with a coach load of happy punters, as jaysay said above, it was a lovely hot sunny day and everybody was in high spirits.
I dropped the punters off at the camp, had my free dinner and picked up the people who had spent the previous week there.

Once again they were all happy and singing and saying how much they had enjoyed their selves. They asked me about the weather back home and I told them how nice and sunny it was.
We were around the north Manchester area when we saw the rain and when we got towards Edenfield we were stopped by the police and told about the floods.
I couldn't believe how bad it was, especially after the fantastic weather we had up until then.
I can't just remember how we got through but the people on the coach who lived around Haslingden were in great panic and couldn't wait to get off and see if their homes had been affected.
I am glad you jogged my memory because I had only just started on the job and couldn't remember when it was.

We once went on a day trip with Ribblesdale Batty Holt to Scarborough as we got over the border into Yorkshire , the driver was asking the passengers for directions.

After talking to an elderly relative who also lived in east view at the time of the floods she has been able to fill in a few details about the car. It was definitely a yellow anglia. It was a hire car which had been hired by a mr price who lived on northfield rd.
Apparently he was asked numerous times to move the car but refused. the car was the cause of the shops coming down as when it when under the road it knocked out a keystone causing the road to collapse.

hi
thanks for looking. my aunt thinks she may have one in her collection. If she has i'll post on here.
Can anyone shed any light on a cottage type that stood near to the stream at the back of the shale bank & was reached by a footbridge at the bottom of roundhill view.
I believe it may have been a mill owners house as there was a mill of some sort there.
Everyone i've spoke to recalls the mill but not the house

according to the 1912 edition of the 1844 ordanance survey map .. catclough mill is marked as in ruins ... and there doesnt seem to be a cottage marked on there .. when i next see my family i'll ask them if they remember that ... i can remember a garage being up above the footbridge ... it used to be to the right .. that flat bit on the photo ..

yes there isnt a history of rising bridge .. and i dont know what happened to all of Mr Parker's notes and information he gathered after he died. Mr Parker being the old headmaster of St Johns Stonefold Primary School. Your aunt should remember Mr Parker as he was well known in rising bridge and lived on rising bridge road after he retired. If you can manage to get hold of the book 'Haslingden' by Chris Aspin and Derek Pilkington .. you will find copies of photos of the floods in 1964 and of the train stuck at rising bridge (at the side of the school) in the snow in 1940 and other old photos of rising bridge in there.

I do remember the garage being on the flat bit but am nearly certain there was a cottage across from it. maybe old age is catching up.Being nearly 100miles from there now makes it hard work.
I have just ordered the book haslingden from amazon.

Just read this thread. The day in question was definitely July 18th 1964. I flew into Manchester airport, in a storm, returning from a all paid once in a lifetime trip to Los Angeles so not a date I can forget. I remember my dad picking me up at the airport and on the way home the road was closed and we had to take a long detour. Took 4 hours to get home.
