Wasn't Haywood Road named after some local dignitary? A few round that area were all built and named at the same time. I used to live on Ramsbottom Street which is one of that bunch. Garden Street is the exception because it was named after gardens.

Just goes to show you shouldn't believe everything you see on the internet, even if it looks convincing.

Precisely Willow, It is a sad reflection on our society that very few folk nowadays are prepared to take the time and trouble to check their facts first. It seems that so much of the information posted on th'internet is gathered from sources on th'internet. Thus errors are compounded.

Haywood Road and surrounding areas

Hi, yep, Haywood Road was named after Frederick Noble Haywood - important man, was Mayor for two years also. During the time he was Mayor, the idea of the cottage hospital started. (He was also principal of an academy)

Think Aitken Street was named after a Mr Aitken who was .....Town Clerk, or something similar. Feeling Ramsbottom Street was named after a well known builder at the time.

Ramsbottom & Sons builders were the ones who actually built the original hospital and Mr. Aitken was chairman of some sort of hospital committee or something I think.

I noticed in that link above that they spell Hyndburn with an 'e' in the middle (Hyndeburn).

Hi Weary Tourist, just looked at this site. I dont agree with something it says i.e.

Haywood Road was previously named Whalley Road - I have never heard this before.

If taken literally then I would agree that is wrong.

I think it is an extremely clumsy way of saying that there can be two references for the address of this hospital.

I certainly agree that information on the internet is not always accurate and care should be taken. Hope you enjoyed the site even though odd errors may be present

Came across this reference to Aitken, Ramsbottom and Haywood
http://www.hrvpct.nhs.uk/avh.htm

According to this site :-
http://www.eh.net/ehresources/howmuch/poundq.php
£7000 in 1898 would be nearly £440,000 in todays terms to build same hospital
