Cottage Hospital was the early name for our Victoria Hospital.

Yes, it's still there.

Atarah, Is there any local collection of hold postcard and or, photographs which can be view or purchased by the public. I passed the Hospital on Wednesday, I look on it with grim memories to be honest, but with fascination at the same time. I didn’t see that much as I was driving a little fast at the time. 30 mph, but I didn't relise where i was until I was almost passed it.

Here's a photograph of the hospital, taken this week, from roughly the same point as the pic on Atarah's postcard.

As you can see there are a couple of extensions added to what was there in the original.

There are also other extensions and additions in different parts of the building.

This is taken from the Whalley Road side of the Whalley Rd/Queens Rd corner looking towards Queens Rd/Haywood Rd direction.

Hi Weary Tourist, just looked at this site. I dont agree with something it says i.e.

Haywood Road was previously named Whalley Road - I have never heard this before.

It seems highly unlikely. Does anyone have an old map of the area? I was under the impression that Haywood Road was created and named when the hospital was built, likewise Aitken Street, Garden Street and surrounding area.

The 1845 OS Map shows Whalley Road as The Whalley Trust Turnpike Road, which follows the same course as it does today, Haywood Road does not exist on that map nor on the 1891 OS Map. So it would seem safe to assume that Haywood Road was never known as Whalley Road.

The same is true of maps I have seen Dated 1800, 1849 and 1928, produced for the Peel's, the Local Board and Accrington Borough Council respectively.
