It's nothing to do with what looks like two different types of stone or the fact that once again it looks like the keystone is not really a keystone, as in one of your previous threads.

Is it the fact that the inner part of the archway looks like two separate stones but is in fact all carved into the one?

Not wide enough to be the main doors so may be a back enterance or the minnons enterance, trying to work it out from memory, fish market down oneside and the road down the other with the outside market behind. Got to be a rear entry. Any hope?

I've just come back from standing staring at the real life version of this long enough to arouse suspicion from passers by. If you read in the papers that a couple of dodgy characters were observed casing the joint around the side of the Town Hall it was me and Busman!

I am stumped about chronology. The door below this arch opens outwards and can only be opened from the inside as the is no handle. Inside is a staircase and to the right a locked grille. Is it a fire escape? Why would you need a light above it?

Deary me. Would it help if I told you that the Peel Insitute, as the Town Hall was formerly called, was first opened in 1858, (on 24th December)?

I seem to remember that the motto changed at some point. Is it that when the building was built this motto wasn't there and was added at a later point?

Accy was granted its charter in 1878 so this wouldn't have been there in 1858

At last! That section of the building was added at a later date and was part of an intended extension to the Peel Institute. If you look around the corner you can see the ragged ends of the stone work. it was for some years covered in white faience bricks, but it seems to have been rendered recently.

I have decided that since entwisi got there first, almost, and because I seem to have a bit of brass to spare, to award both entwisi and Willow 2K each. is that fair?
