Edward Leyland 1921-1941
Thought I’d share this with you all. It’s part of a book(let) I’ve been putting together for the last few years about the history of my family. These things are usually a bit boring to anyone outside of the family but it might be of interest to any local history/WW2 buffs. It’s a bit of background about one of the soldiers named on the Oakhill memorial.

Thanks for this. Just the same age as my dad. They might have known each other. It was my dad's 90th birtjhday last week, even though he died when he was 69. I had a Bennie with him

interesting to me steve, we shoulda gone to Normandy in march to visit a grave, of paris's uncle who is also on the Oak Hill monument, had to cancel cos she was ill, but have re-booked fer April next year.

Interesting stuff, Steve. My old fella was in an anti-aircraft unit and was posted to Egypt at the same time, so maybe they knew each other.

Yeah, Egypt seemed to be a kind of staging post for allied operations in Africa during WW2 and also WW1 as my great-grandad was there before he was sent to the Somme.

His name was John Henry Leyland. He served in the 12th KOYLI. It was only after the war that the family came to Accrington.
