Foreign Foods Quiz.

1 Attachment(s)
This is in two parts, however, you have to get both to score the point, so if someone picks up because you only get one part and names the other, no complaining.:D

Name the dish/drink and which country it comes from:

Kate I dunno...to both of my answers.....gut feeling is lasagne......and stroganoff, but I expect to be wrong.
As for the Kangaroo thing...yes the Australians do eat skippy.......and crocs too.
I have had Kangaroo meat......didn't like it (no surprises there then) it has to be eaten very rare or it is very tough. The bit that I tried had only been shown the frying pan...and a good vet with an electric probe could have easily started it's motor again

Croc meat......never had that, but himself had a crocodile pie.....he said it was like chicken(this was 'farmed croc' fed on chicken so I guess it isn't surprising that it tasted like chicken).

re chicken kiev OR Tsiplenokovo Po-Kievski - i thought this might be the answer you were expecting, however the dish is originally french created by Nicolas (Francois) Appert who was a brewer, pickler, confectioner, and chef who also discovered the principles of canning and preserving of food. the dish was taken to russia, as the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna preferred french food. it is believed that it was named the kiev in new york to appease the russian poulation and the name was then brought back to europe. it didn't become popular in russia until after wwII

Thanks for posting Steve. If I'm right then 15 is laverbread, Wales.

It's a kind of seaweed and not bad when eaten with bacon. I did buy some years ago from Swansea Market when we were on hols down there.

PS I'm not clear as to whether each country only has one mention in this Quiz in which case your tequila sunrise USA would not be allowed as we've already had burgers. It does certainly look like that however.

PPS I now know what 22 is as found the very same picture on Google images. Hope that's not cheating! ;)

Laverbread probably tastes better than it looks. There are a couple of dishes from France already so I think countries can crop up more than once, although my answer could still be wrong!
PS I won't tell anyone you've been looking things up on Google!!

Just looked up Kate's post 38 in which she gives the answers and yes there are two things from France on there but I would quibble and say moules frites is Belgian... was going to suggest a French dish for no 5 but not sure now!
Anyway,... 22 is moussaka from Greece. And I'm sure I'm not the only one to look for a little help in these matters.

I had written Colcannon originally but was with my friend Charlottte who lives in Belfast and she said that the presence of spring onions (garnish) meant it could only be Champ!

(Went to visit her there 2 yrs ago and went to their local Tescos -they had the biggest selection of different potatoes that I had ever seen in my life!:D)

Yes can see the spring onions but the lumps in the actual dish look bigger, more like cabbage/kale. Champ is only supposed to have the onions isn't it?

BTW I make the Scottish version which is called rumbledethumps - potato, leek and cabbage. Yummy!

Yes, had the original answer as Belgium, but after doing a little googling myself, was attributed to both Belgium and Northern France, so gave it to Jedimaster to save any arguments.. :)

not given up exactly there is too much controversy over countries of origin when it comes to the history of food. many countries/towns claim to be the first but quite often they are wrong. consider what we perceive to be traditional british dishes that actually come from somewhere else!

You mean like chicken tikka masala?

the practice of frying fish was traditionally jewish - they would fry the fish the night before the sabbath so they did not have to cook on the sabbath day.

from jamie oliver's new series: Lasagne is British! And other UK food facts that might surprise you - Channel4 - 4Food

Lasagne is British!

Italians might hold their layered pasta masterpiece up as a symbol of patriotic pride, but some historians have caused a stir by suggesting that Mamma's famous dish might actually be, well, Mum's.

In 2003, researchers at the British Museum noted that 14th Century cookbook The Forme of Cury, popular during the time of Richard III, features a dish called 'Loseyn', made up of sheets of pasta topped with cheese.

Haggis is English!

The Scots hold many distinctions over the English – their dramatic scenery, their fetching kilts, the recording career of the Proclaimers – but their national dish might not be quite the patriotic plateful that Robert Burns once thought.

Haggis, 'the great chieftain of the puddin' race', is sheep's heart, liver and lungs, mixed with oatmeal, suet, onion and spices, traditionally eaten by Scots every January on Burns' Night. But in 2009, food historian Catherine Brown found reference to haggis in English cookery book The English Hus-wife, from 1615, which is a whole 132 years before the first Scottish reference to the delicacy. Sorry Nessie.

22 Was the Moussaka - Greece which, if you look back, you had the best chance of the correct answer.

Being red, it might be Borsch beetroot soup, but it would only be served in a glass when served chilled.
It is 'eastern European' maybe Transylvanian because the one time I made it my son couldn't eat it, saying it was like eating blood.

Well done Susie, you're right! Looked one up on Google. That clue was too cryptic for me.

OK Steve... here goes. Anagram of organise (signalled by the word confused) around the letter p (for pea, which is a pulse like beans and lentils) gives you Singapore. A lifetime of cryptic crosswords helps!

So did I at first, and bean and lentil. Then I googled tomato juice cocktails and grenadine cocktails and in the latter list the word Singapore leapt out at me.
