Foreign Foods Quiz.

This is in two parts, however, you have to get both to score the point, so if someone picks up because you only get one part and names the other, no complaining.:D

Re: Foreign Foods Quiz.
Kate I dunno...to both of my answers.....gut feeling is lasagne......and stroganoff, but I expect to be wrong.
As for the Kangaroo thing...yes the Australians do eat skippy.......and crocs too. I have had Kangaroo meat......didn't like it (no surprises there then) it has to be eaten very rare or it is very tough. The bit that I tried had only been shown the frying pan...and a good vet with an electric probe could have easily started it's motor again Croc meat......never had that, but himself had a crocodile pie.....he said it was like chicken(this was 'farmed croc' fed on chicken so I guess it isn't surprising that it tasted like chicken). |

Re: Foreign Foods Quiz.
re chicken kiev OR Tsiplenokovo Po-Kievski - i thought this might be the answer you were expecting, however the dish is originally french created by Nicolas (Francois) Appert who was a brewer, pickler, confectioner, and chef who also discovered the principles of canning and preserving of food. the dish was taken to russia, as the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna preferred french food. it is believed that it was named the kiev in new york to appease the russian poulation and the name was then brought back to europe. it didn't become popular in russia until after wwII

PS I'm not clear as to whether each country only has one mention in this Quiz in which case your tequila sunrise USA would not be allowed as we've already had burgers. It does certainly look like that however. PPS I now know what 22 is as found the very same picture on Google images. Hope that's not cheating! ;) |

Re: Foreign Foods Quiz.
not given up exactly there is too much controversy over countries of origin when it comes to the history of food. many countries/towns claim to be the first but quite often they are wrong. consider what we perceive to be traditional british dishes that actually come from somewhere else!

Re: Foreign Foods Quiz.
from jamie oliver's new series: Lasagne is British! And other UK food facts that might surprise you - Channel4 - 4Food
Lasagne is British! Italians might hold their layered pasta masterpiece up as a symbol of patriotic pride, but some historians have caused a stir by suggesting that Mamma's famous dish might actually be, well, Mum's. In 2003, researchers at the British Museum noted that 14th Century cookbook The Forme of Cury, popular during the time of Richard III, features a dish called 'Loseyn', made up of sheets of pasta topped with cheese. Haggis is English! The Scots hold many distinctions over the English – their dramatic scenery, their fetching kilts, the recording career of the Proclaimers – but their national dish might not be quite the patriotic plateful that Robert Burns once thought. Haggis, 'the great chieftain of the puddin' race', is sheep's heart, liver and lungs, mixed with oatmeal, suet, onion and spices, traditionally eaten by Scots every January on Burns' Night. But in 2009, food historian Catherine Brown found reference to haggis in English cookery book The English Hus-wife, from 1615, which is a whole 132 years before the first Scottish reference to the delicacy. Sorry Nessie. |
