|
Re: Pop Quiz
The Quireboys were formed in London in late 1985/86 after Spike and Guy Bailey met through Spike’s older sister who worked in Guy’s local pub. The main nucleus of the band featured Spike, Guy Bailey and Chris Johnstone. After Chris briefly left the band, Nigel Mogg was recruited to fill the vacant bassist slot. Chris later decided he wanted to rejoin the band, so he learned piano to complete the initial line up. The band were originally called ‘The Choirboys’ after a movie they had seen, but colleagues on the building site where Spike and Guy worked joked they should be called ‘The Queerboys’ due to the way they looked.

Re: Pop Quiz
Led by vocalist Spike Gray and guitarist Guy Bailey, the Queerboys [sic] were rounded out by bassist Nigel Mogg (the nephew of bassist Pete Way of U.F.O. fame) and Paul Hornby on drums. Hornby quickly split to form future U.K. underground darlings the Dogs D'Amour along with toxic frontman, Tyla. By 1987, the Queerboys had changed their name to the more consumer friendly Quireboys and had added keyboard man Chris Johnstone, guitarist Ginger, and a drummer by the name of Coze to the fold. In 1988, the band recorded "Mayfair" and eventual live favorite "There She Goes Again" as a pair of singles for EMI U.K. imprint Survival Records. By 1990, Ginger had been fired (he would go on to form the critically acclaimed the Wildhearts), and after bringing in new drummer Ian Wallace to the fold, the Quireboys signed to EMI proper and recorded a stunning debut entitled A Bit of What You Fancy. On Fancy, the band made no bones of hiding their influences — they didn't even have to try. The spirit of Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, and the Faces was well and alive on song's like "Sex Party," the gentle "Sweet Mary Ann," and especially the let's-drink-one-with-the-boys "7 O'Clock."

Re: Pop Quiz
"Candle In The Wind '97", produced by George Martin, was released on September 13, 1997 as a double A-side with "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" and instantly became the fastest-selling single in the UK, selling 658,000 copies in the UK on that day alone, over 1.5 million copies in its first week, and remaining at number one for 5 weeks.
It eventually sold 4.86 million copies in the UK, overtaking "Do They Know It's Christmas" to become the best-selling single of all time in the UK. It also sold over 11 million copies in the US (again the all-time best-selling single) after receiving advance orders of nearly 9 million, and was number one in most countries around the world (In Canada, it spent three years in the top 20, with 45 weeks at the top spot). In total, over 33 million copies were sold around the world, making it the best-selling single of all-time worldwide. All artist and composer royalties and record company profits were donated to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. |
