I came across this phrase on a TV documentary not long ago and it surprised me. I can't remember the context now though. |

OK I'm going to tell you this, I have now found where the reference comes from.
The answer is "One if by land and two if by sea". Apparently it's a very famous line from Longfellow's poem about Paul Revere and the American revolution. They arranged to give lantern signals when the British were spotted, one if they came by land and two if they came by sea. It's also now the name of a bar/restaurant in New York, named after the line in the Longfellow poem. |
