Must be a different language .. probably Southerners, who have a more flowery way of speaking.

Says plans to build a new one ... not saying when.

As far as I am aware or concerned, the memorial celebration is absolutely nothing to do with any work that is being done on the Coppice - it will simply be a celebration at the end of it (to celebrate the centenary of the Coppice being handed over to the people of Accrington).

The celebration will involve an exhibition, workshops and a celebratory parade.

I know nothing about any demolition or renovation - as you say Graham, it is REMADE that are working on the masterplan!

Well that's a very funny way of renovating something unless it was absolutely impossible to do for safety reasons.

Does anyone know the history of the Coppice? A friend of mine is convinced it wasn't always called that.

Well, this is a coincidence, think Garinda and I met your friend whilst we were in the library ... said he knew you , asked the same question. He is probably correct and was just a lump on the Pennine moors originally.

Asked Bob Dobson, don't think he was quite sure when it became the Coppice either.

Some improvement of footpaths and thinning of the trees seems to be included in the Peel Park project Flashy... guess this covers what you are asking.

Shelter on the Coppice RIP

I see the civic vandals have finally removed the one source of shelter up the coppice for dog walkers and those who just want to take a stroll.

I was up there today with the dog to see workman just finishing bulldozing the old place to the ground and removing rubble in a small dumper truck.

Its been a feature of my many walks for too many years to recall and I for one will miss the old place.

And before any one goes on about drug talking and underage drinking on the coppice I would just like to point out that if those factors alone were any criteria for reducing something to rubble well there wouldnt be much left of accrington itself as well as the lower level parks and playing fields and secondly three quarters of those who might indulge in such activities would be too idle to get up there.

RIP the coppice shelter

All I could tell him was that I've never known it as anything else and I don't think my Dad ever mentioned it being anything else but he did call the land at the Baxenden end Moleside.

Re: The Coppice Shelter

The name Coppice is derived from the South African word for little hill - copje
So it may have been named by soldiers returning from the Boer War

By mentioning the name Peter Britcliffe you have turned what could have been a useful and informative post into a political dig as usual. Why not just give us the information without resorting to Political moaning? I am sure most of us would prefer it that way.
