Accy rail!!!

 Having been a driver for many years i decided to travel by rail to Leeds last weekend, checked out the times etc on web and hurried down to station to book my ticket...Mmmm what a waste of time that was! Ticket office locked and not a soul about. Station looked like it was in the middle of a ghost town and looked like it had been unused for years...Good job i could pay on the train! come on northernline ....get your act together!!! Ahhhh well back to driving for me!

Re: Accy rail!!!

That's something that I find really annoying, there's all the health and environment benefits of using public transport but it doesn't cater for the needs of lots of us.

joobyjooby 20-03-2006 14:39

Re: Accy rail!!!

Yeah Basher i agree and would use public transport more often, but looking at accy station on friday i think id feel a bit uneasy if i had to travel at night from there ...J

Re: Accy rail!!!

now i have a car i will never use public transport again unless there is absolutely no other choice and i have exhausted all other options like lifts from a friend etc

now if our public transport was anything like public transport in spain then i would have no problem at all , every train i went on was spot on time to the second and was clean

every bust or train i have sat on in teh uk has been late and riddled with chewing gum and puke

It's a cost-cutting measure. The trains operate like buses, you're supposed to get your ticket from the conductor. Church & Ossy doesn't even have a booking office to be open. But you have to admit, the train journey between Accy and Leeds is spectacular, and the scenery is free. The added bonus is that you get to look at it, which you don't when you're driving.

Re: Accy rail!!!

Well said pendy the views were great but still think accy.. and chucrh and ossy for that metter could do with a total face lift. How welcoming for out of towners to be greeted with a nice station instead of the dumps they are now. You know a few flowers and a good clean up wouldnt cost the earth.:rose2: :rose2: :rose2: :rose2: :rose2:

Totally Agree, even though I've never been to your station. Image is everything.

Re: Accy rail!!!

Yeh I agree Accy does need a facelift as do most of the stations in east lancs. If the government in the UK spent as much on rail subsidies as they do on the roads in this country like in other european countries our railways would be up to the same spec as holland or spain etc.. I work for Northern Rail and agree that a little paint and a few flowers would brighten up the stations including Accrington, but then the vandals who frequent our stations at night would only wreck them...To deter these people would involve stations being staffed full time but again this comes down to who will pay for it. Accrington already has CCTV coverage from the local police station but this does not seem to deter the local vandals.

Re: Accy rail!!!

Yeah its such a shame we have to live with these "local vandals" me thinks the world has gone soft! When i was a kid we used to run from the local bobby and get a clip round the earhole if we were caught! Dont know if anyone remembers PILKY the local bobby in Ossy but he was someone to recon with....J

Strictly speaking, Church & Ossy isn't a station it's a Halt,
agree totally about Accy station though, I remember when there was a proper waiting room on the Blackburn side, it sometimes even had a coal fire in Winter.

When did it stop being a station?

It's announced at Preston just like all the other stops.

It must have once have been a station because it had a station master's house and a ticket office.

Re: Accy rail!!!

I travel to and from Accy to Falkirk by train and agree Accy station isnt the best. Must say though public transport for me at home is worlds ahead of Accies. The rail service is clean modern and punctual and a lot of the stations havnt change even Polmont has the old station house above the ticket office and a heated waiting room on both sides. There are very few "halts" as such and they too have a ticket office open from 06:00 to 19:00.

Re: Accy rail!!!

There is a notice on the door of the office at accy which states its open from 6.45 till evening but ive been twice now in the past two weeks and both times it was closed. When i went to leeds then on to sheffield i noticed a big difference in the trains too....northernline to leeds then virgin to sheffield,i know i enjoyed the jorney to sheffield better the train was imaculate and the anouncements were clear even the buffet car was open. The train to leeds was like it hadnt seen a cleaner never mind a coat of paint!! Well done virgin lines show northern lines how its done will you

Re: Accy rail!!!

Hi, the opening hours displayed at Accrington are 6.40am to 3pm Mondays to Saturdays and only on Sundays is it open in the 'evenings' 9.10am to 4.45pm. Hope this clarifies why it is closed when you travel in the evenings!

Re: Accy rail!!!

I was at the station at 9.30 am on friday last week and again at 12.15 pm both times is was closed

So JJ you a fan of Virgin Voyegers and Pendelinos then? These are great trains esspecially as You can listen to radio and plug in the laptop.

Re: Accy rail!!!

I travelled from Preston to Bristol a few weeks ago. I think it must be the first train I have been on since about 1989, except ones pulled by Thomas The Tank Engine :). The train was on time, clean and comfortable. The best thing about it was that it only cost me £20 to travel almost 200 miles. How can you complain at that?

joobyjooby 23-03-2006 08:57

Re: Accy rail!!!

I agree spuggie virgin are 100% better than northernline....would travel with them anytime, JJ

joobyjooby 23-03-2006 09:00

Re: Accy rail!!!

The cost of my trip to sheffield was £18.30 for an open return so the cost wasnt the issue Neil it was the state of accy station and the state of northernline trains.....if virgin can do it why cant northern?

SPUGGIE J 23-03-2006 09:12

Re: Accy rail!!!

Word of warning for future travel on cheap tickets they are trying to do away with some of them. :(

Also it may sound daft but with Virgin 2 singles can sometimes work out cheaper than a return. Paid £17.50 for two singles from Falkirk to Accy and Accy to Falkirk because I purchased them 3 weeks in advance. Seems to be down to how many seats are allocated to each ticket so the earlier or later you travel is a great money saver. :)

Saved a good few quid over the years doing this. :D

Re: Accy rail!!!

Accy rail!!! 23-03-2006 09:44 Shut up and find your own local forum

why don't you shut up and get a life. If you cared about accy, you'd agree with me that image is every thing and that accy station should be perfect. As for me bing an outsider, you should value an outsiders point of view, local people often don't see just how bad something looks till an outsider points it out.
I'll say again, I can't comment, Ive never been to your station, but I agree, it should be open, image is everything, especially to outsiders. It's a good job not everybody in accy has your out look or it would be a right hole.
As for my own local forum, I have one thanks, its http://atherstone-online.co.uk.
When I move to accy, which will be my local forum then?

Madhatter 23-03-2006 19:18

Re: Accy rail!!!

This is a local forum, for local people, we don't want your kind round here. lmao
This backs up, what i keep hearing off people when i mention rawtenstall or accy. I say "i visited monday", they reply "did they chase you out the town with a stick" I say "no they're a really friendly bunch up there, you should go and visit", "na thanks, I aint desperate, anyway I hear they're all inbreds"
when im told to find my own local forum, not only is it insulting me its insulting all that do make people welcome and giving you all a bad reputation.

Anyway, I travelled to accy by van on monday, and I'd like to thanks sarah, mick, anne, staggers and less for giving me a warm friendly accy welcome.
