I don't rmember the washing machines.....I do remember the names of parts of the factory....you went in through the main entrance & on the right was 1st, 2nd 3rd street.....then one of the buildings was called the Randstadt or something similar...another was called the Burcoplant...or something similar..I know in the second year I was there I worked in the top factory where they had the presses for the sweepers & the plastic coating machine...I think that's where most of the women used to work.

Re: Ewbank carpet sweepers

Atarah, Ewbank was the brand name of the carpet sweepers, but the original owners of the factory was Entwistle and Kenyon.

Re: Ewbank carpet sweepers

...And it was called Ewbank because the factory was located by the river where the sheep used to graze...hence Ewe-bank.....Baaaaaaaaaa....Baaaaaaaaaaaa

Hi Tealeaf, you've raised a good point there. Nobody, just nobody, seems to know the origin of the name EWBANK.

Re: Ewbank carpet sweepers

My suggestions are E for Entwisle ......... and the K at the end for Kenyon, but ... what about the middle bits?

Remember going to America in 1982, and my mother sent quite a few ewbank sweepers over with me.  Got some very strange looks from the custom guys when they opened my case.
