Re: Best English Chippy.
Can we widen this discussion out (as Jeremy Paxman likes to say) to all-time best chippy in Accy & district, past and present?
I would nominate Len's on the corner of Ranger Street and Eden Street. His fish and chips were the best I've ever tasted anywhere, and, as my mum sometimes says, "when he died, the secret died with him". I reckon the key to his success was the fact that he didn't diversify. No pies, no pasties, no sausages and curry sauce would have mortally offended him. No, he just stuck to what he knew best - fish, chips and peas (with, of course, the obligatory packs of Park Drive and bottles of Tizer in the corner). And it worked...Len's was the most popular chippy in the district. I can still see the queues stretching up Ranger Street. Accrington's best-ever chippy, in my opinion! |

Reckon it was late 70's/early 80's when Len and his missus called it a day, Mr C. I've never tasted fish & chips quite as good since then. I remember customers queueing up with their bowls for a "mixture" - chips and peas mixed together. You never see that these days.

Re: Best English Chippy.
I know that Kingston is a little out of the way, and not quite Accy and district, but there is a great chippy/pub at the corner of Johnson and King St. If you are ever in Kingston, and feel the need for fish and chips, try the Pilot House Pub. No steak and kidney pud, but there is steak and kidney pie, scotch eggs, steak and oyster pie, and really decent fish and chips. Great atmosphere, english beer on tap, 100 metres from the lake. The cook and part-owner, Margaret Grogan, is from Preston.
