Me too ... we had the wettest July on record, and August is looking a little damp too ... but what the hell, the city is green and lush, the gardens look fantastic, as do the trees.

I hate the rain makes my hair curly and none of my clients turn up ( i think some of them think they may melt)

I'm thinking maybe its a reference to gas tar bubbles , years back when the tar would bubble up around the cobble stones during hot weather and the kids would 'pop' them ;)

lol yes your right, and i am a foreigner, from Eccles, Manchester originally but in Helmshore now.
We used to come in as children covered in pitch when it was hot. It was impossible to get off our socks, cardies fingers, hair, it was disgusting stuff lol.
