Re: The Queen
Before I grew older and wiser (i.e. before life experience) I was a young royalist who collected glossy 'royalty magazines' in the early 50's.
I distinctly remember the queen's (note lack of capital Q) visit to Accrington as part of her UK 'tour of ascension to the throne'. I stood with my primary school mates, waving my little flag, at the bottom of Burnley Rd, as the Rolls sped past with the windows up. All I got was a quick glimpse of the duke. I don't think that her car even made a stop in Accrington, so we were no more worth a visit then, any more than we are now, as Hyndburn |
Re: The Queen
I remember the Queen's visit .. :D Must haved only been about 400 yards from you Margaret .. was just a little up on the left after the junction of Penny House Lane and Burnley Road.
My memory was that she was in an open top car, and although only a fleeting glance, can remember what a beautiful complexion she had. |

Re: The Queen
The Queen visited Accrington when I was in the Territorial Army which was from July1954 to 1956 I was in the Guard of Honor Outside the Town Hall the date would probable be in 1955

Re: The Queen
Seem to think the whole caboodle went up Burnley Rd?
|
Re: The Queen
I think it was about 1953. I remember standing outside the town hall.
|
Re: The Queen
It might have been in the first part of 1954. I was still at Peel Park (which I left in July 1954), and we were all wheeled out to stand in Burnley Road near the corner of Alice Street. I seem to remember it being quite a nice sunny day.

Re: The Queen
Our Queen came up north on 13th April 1955, she arrived in Morecambe at 10.00 amand made her way to Southport calling at different towns en route. On 14th April she arrived at Darwen for 10.00am on to Blackburn when she stopped at the Mullard factory before going onto Accrington town hall for 12.35pm , then onto more towns before leaving from Colne at 4.55pm.
My dad was presented to her at Mullards and has saved his invite, menu from lunch etc. I inherited them in 2007 when he died. |
Re: The Queen
Her Majesty has certainly been to Rishton as I am just cleaning up a reel of film footage of it, recorded by one of my residents.
It was in 1967. |
Re: The Queen
clearly she has been here twice then.

Re: The Queen
Interesting take on Her Maj on the Italian news this evening.
Juxtaposition with Maggie Thatcher -how Lady T wanted to be Queen back then but Her Maj was actually the Iron Lady, quite clever.:D |

Re: The Queen
When the Queen came through Clayton in 1967 we were taken from All Saints to stand along Blackburn Road with red, white and blue balloons. We were made to stand in order but by the time she came we'd moved round and half the balloons had burst so I'm not sure the effect was quite what it was supposed to be.
