To answer your question emzy, the 2 buttons are as described by mummiboo, one is a half flush and one a full flush, the chrome coloured ring around them will unscrew and allow the lid to be lifted, it is this ring that is attached to the syphon so that it holds the buttons in place and prevents the lids from coming off, if the buttons are sticking, they are not aligned properly, have the council send the plumber back to sort it out. If it is a single button by the way, press and let go for short flush, press and hold for full flush.

Thanks, it is 2 button (one big round one with another smaller one slightly raised within the bigger button if that makes sense). I will give it a go and see how i get on, but will ring HH to sort if problem persists. (problem last happened to babysitter when I was out a few weeks back, it wouldnt stop flushing so had to come home to sort it)

Sorted!! It did screw off (never thought of trying that to be honest )

Thanks for your help Derekgas, most appreciated

Although this has left me wondering about my life................ if one of my main problems is how to take the lid off my toilet then I either have a very sad life or a very content one with nothing better to worry about lol :D

I have trouble with those push button flushes, can never seem to get the short flush to flush. I think it's my fingers. I prefer the old fashioned handle and put a brick inside to save water.

Sod saving water, I want plenty of water flushing out my almost 100 year old drains. Last time I had to clear the pipe was not a nice job.
